Authors: Mahnaz Afkhami, Greta Hofmann Nemiroff, Haleh Vaziri
Publisher: Sisterhood is Global Institute, 1998

The main objectives of this manual are to assists women to identify sources of violence in the family, community, society and state; to communicate their information about and understanding of violence to other women and men; and to influence governments to formulate and implement policies, which eliminate violence against women and girls. The manual is based on a cultured-based, grassroots-oriented, participatory, and dialogical model that develops a framework through which facilitators may convey universal concepts of human rights in association with indigenous ideas, traditions, myths, and texts rendered in local idioms. It is organized into four parts, with Part 1 as the introduction. Part 2 provides an analysis of the nature of violence, the justifications offered for this behavior, and the causes and consequences of this multi-faceted problem. It ends with a series of recommendations for concrete action to prevent, resist, and cope with the after-effects of violence against women and girls.
